MLP Creature Contest! Custom sculpture prize!

 Changes that you will want to know about.

I'm cutting down the required drawings to be just front, side and back and in color instead of all those plus two other poses. I'm doing this to try and make it simpler since a lot of people haven't seen/forget all of the requirements for submissions.
New prizes added! WingsOfNightfall is offering a choice of either a full-body vector, or pixel pony, to first and second place, and 50x50px icons for the runner-up(pers)
There's now a definite contest deadline of December 20th.
We have our first few entries now!

So here's the contest I've talked about! I might make some minor adjustments if I realize something needs to be clarified or anything like that. With this posting up, the contest is officially open.

Please share this contest with others! It'll be fun if we get a lot of entries!

 What to do 
Please make sure you read and follow all of the entry rules.

 Design your own creature based off of a popular pony character from the show My Little Pony (Please note that this means no original characters will be accepted for this particular contest). It can be a real mythical creature (like a griffon, hippocamp, kirin, dragon, etc.) or you can make up your own creature! Your creature design must be made just for this contest! Don't submit old work you made a long time ago.

 Make the color scheme match the pony of your choice. (so if you choose Rarity, be sure your Rarity creature has a white body with purple hair.) Slight differences in color are acceptable if they support your creature design.


Draw the creature in color in a turnaround reference with front, side and back views (Feel free to draw more angles than this though!)

Also, include a minimum of 3 pose drawings of the creature. IF you draw your turnaround pictures in a pose that could be used for the sculpture, you can count that as 1 of your pose drawings. (If your entry wins, and you decide you don't want to pay for shipping, 2 of these pose drawings will be used to make the figurines of your creature... more info about this below). I'm cutting this out to simplify things. Instead of these poses I'll just discuss sculpture pose options with the contest winner.

 Title your deviation with the character name and the name of your creature and 'contest entry' So for example, "Pinkie Pie Griffon Contest Entry". If you made up your own creature type, please come up with a name for it. It doesn't have to be anything fancy. (if putting all this is too long for your title and it won't accept your whole title, feel free to abbreviate whichever words you want or you can just leave off the word 'entry').

Put a link to this journal post in your entry.

 Contact me, either by note or comment to let me know you made an entry and I will put it on this journal post here so everyone can see. 

 If your creature can have hair, try to design the hair so it matches your choice of pony (so if you pick Pinkie Pie, and your creature design can have hair, it should have curly pink hair)

 Try to keep your design like creatures that might appear in the show. So if your design is not overly detailed, is at least sorta cute and has kind of big eyes, you're probably ok lol

 Putting the ponies cutie mark on your creature is NOT necessary, but you can if you want to.

 The Prizes!

  When the contest is over, I will choose the creature design I like best. If you win, you will have the option to pay for your shipping or get your prize totally for free to you.

If you choose not to pay for your own shipping, I will sculpt my favorite TWO of the three pose drawings the winner submitted with their entry. The winner will get to pick the sculpture out of the two that they like best as their prize. The other sculpture will be sold on ebay as a means to earn the shipping fee so that I can ship the prize to the winner, if they live anywhere in the world, without them having to pay for the shipping.

If you choose to pay for your own shipping, only ONE sculpture will be made, and I will pick the pose I like best from your winning entry to make your prize from.

The winner's designs and the runner up designs will be posted on a feature for a while on my page. I will determine how many runners up there will be depending on how many entries there are, and I'll decide the feature length when the time comes, however, I'm leaning towards one or two weeks.


If anyone would like to offer prizes for this contest we can have a lot more winners! If anyone would like to offer artwork or anything else, we could put in second, third, etc. place winners too! If you are interested please contact me!

 The Deadline 

The first day of the school winter break is December 20 so that will be the deadline for the contest!

Because I will be a substitute teacher for the coming school year, I was thinking of a deadline for the contest at the beginning of the school winter break. I will get back to you on when that is specifically but plan for a deadline in mid-December.

Things to Keep in Mind 

 You can enter as many times as you like! Each entry must be complete and separate from your other entries but you can enter as many different designs as you like. If you do, try to mix it up and submit a different pony and creature design. This will increase your chances of winning!

 This isn't a drawing contest! The winner will be picked based on design NOT your drawing skill. So if you have a great creature idea, you have just as good a chance at winning if you draw really well or not.

 Because the winning design will be made into a figurine. PLEASE keep in mind that I am limited to the rules of physics lol. So please don't make magical floating halos or floaty anime wings or anything like that because I can't really make that without using clear plastic rods to hold them up, and that really distracts from the figure when you have to have a lot of clear rods, so the likelihood of that type of design getting chosen is very slim.

 Also, on the same note, I am limited by the materials I have, so please don't make a creature design that I would need a large piece of transparent material to make the figure. This pokemon in gelatinous-like stuff is a good example of what NOT to make your design like.

.. I mean it can be done.. but I just don't have the materials to do it and it would be a big hassle to make for something I'm going to be giving away for free.

 That being said, I CAN make figures using sheets of transparent, or semi transparent stuff. So feel free to make your creature designs with transparent or translucent fins, wings or see-through glasses or anything along those lines that you want. 

 Legal Stuff 

Thanks to WendyAWolfe for writing up much better legal stuff than I had lol Seriously, I only know enough about legal writing to cover myself in the most basic of sense.

By entering this contest you, the submitter, agree to the following terms:
(1) You retain all copyrights to your original artwork and intellectual property rights to your original creature design.
(2) You grant me, the artist, derivative rights to create my own interpretation of your creature design in a sculpture representation. 
(3) I, the artist, will retain all copyrights to my sculpture interpretation of your creature design. Because you, the submitter, retain the intellectual property rights to the creature design, my commercial performance will be restricted as follows:
(a) I can make one instance of the sculpture as a prize gift for you, the submitter.
(b) I may optionally make one instance of the sculpture for sale.
(c) I may publish photographs of the sculpture on public gallery sites, such as DeviantArt, and on my own web sites & blogs; provided the photographs include complete credits identifying the submitter and the artist.
(4) If your creature design is selected by me for making into a sculpture, then you and I will negotiate the reimbursement for shipping costs. Option 1 is you agree to pay the shipping costs. Option 2 is you agree to allow me to make a second instance (see 3.b above) of the sculpture for sale.
(5) You, the submitter, waive any claim to monies received from the sale of the second instance (see 3.b above).
(6) The selection of the winning submissions is made at the discretion of the artist, and is final.
